What to Expect?

At the moment, I am not running group classes, just private one-on-one sessions. If at all possible, I like to do the initial evaluation where the dog lives in order to see what the environment is like and how the dog behaves at home. After that lessons will be done either at my facility or out in the real world.

I am a balanced trainer, meaning both positive training with motivation and reward, and also consequences for bad behavior. After all, that is how every living creature on this planet learns. I design a specific program for each individual dog, using techniques and tools that will help that particular dog and owner. Teaching involves plenty of praise, food, treats, toys, etc - whatever works best to motivate your dog. Tools may include clickers, Volhard collars, slip leads, long lines, pinch/prong collars, and remote collars.

A quick word about pinch/prong collars and remote collars. These tools have an undeserved bad perception for most people. In fact, they are two of the most gentle and humane methods of communicating with dogs. Pinch collars are not sharp and do not hurt a dog's neck when used correctly. They communicate by touch, just as dogs do with each other. Dogs experience a mildly uncomfortable sensation if they pull against them. There are no harsh leash corrections. It's power steering for dogs. I have seen utterly amazing results in just a few minutes with a pinch collar, including dramatic turnarounds for dogs with serious issues that were on the verge of euthanasia - or people with arm and shoulder injuries from being pulled by large dogs. Make sure you are buying a good quality collar (Herm-Sprenger is recommended) and have instruction on how to fit it properly and introduce it to the dog.

Electronic or remote collars, like most other technology in our world these days (eg. computers, cell phones, etc), have come a long way from when they were first produced and used. Most trainers are now using low-levels, which at baseline the dog can barely feel, and turning up the stim when necessary. The stim feels like a TENS machine if you can relate to that yourself. The collars I recommend go from 0-100 and most dogs work on levels less than 10, which I can't even feel myself. As an example, I have a Beagle from a rescue situation. She would be living her life in a fenced yard or always on a leash - her hunting drive is very strong. With the e-collar, she can run off leash safely anywhere when I take the whole pack out with the 4-wheeler. The joy she has when running is heartwarming! Surprisingly for most people, e-collars are extremely effective for sensitive or nervous dogs. Everything is very quiet when using them, no physical or leash corrections, no frustration from the owner, and a very hands off approach for dogs that are nervous about being handled.

All of my own dogs are e-collar trained from about 5 months of age if they grow up here, or shortly after they arrive if they come later. It gives you the closest to a 100% reliable recall possible - so your dog can enjoy a fantastic quality of life with plenty of safe freedom.
